Minor Midgets Bring Home Silver from Peterborough

January 23, 2012 – The Minor Midget AAA team finished first in their division at the Fitzsimmons Tournament of Champions in Peterborough this past weekend. They finished the round robin play with a record of 3 wins and 1 tie. In the first game they defeated Buffalo Regals 6-4, game two they faced South County Coyotes and won 3-1. Day two saw them face the Halton Hurricanes in game three which resulted in a 4-4 tie and game four was a win against the Toronto Red Wings by a score of 8-2.

On Sunday the Jr. 67's faced home team favorite Peterborough Pete’s in the Semi-Finals and won 4-0 in a hard fought game. The finals were played against the number 1 ranked Toronto Marlboros. In front of a packed arena the fans were entertained to a very tight checking and physical game. The Jr. 67's lead 1-0 after the first period but 2 unanswered goals in the second sent the Jr. 67's to the room down 2-1 during the intermission. The Jr. 67's came out strong in the 3rd period and had a few chances to tie up the game but were denied only to have Toronto score late in the 3rd to win the game by a score of 3-1.

Andrew Abou-Assaly was named the Tournament top scorer with 4 goals and 9 assists for a total of 13 points in 6 games.

Ottawa pair test their mettle at Lake Placid

A pair of young hockey players from Ottawa has headed south of the border to ply their skills at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, N.Y. Devin Desnoyers, an 18-year-old from Manotick who played for Metcalfe Jets and 17-year-old Taylor Widenmaier from Ottawa’s south side who played for Ottawa 67’s AAA Midgets last season, have so far made their name for themselves early on in the Mountaineers’ season.

In less than a month, the Desnoyers and Widenmaier have helped their team to four wins in four games.
Widenmaier, who attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School, said the first time he saw inside their home rink, he instantly felt it was the right decision to attend the academy.

“It’s something to see, but to play on the ice where the greatest upset in sports history happened is just unbelievable,” said Widenmaier, referring to the United States’ victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics, which was staged at Lake Placid.

He is confident his team can take a run at the International Junior “A” Hockey League title this year.

“I've never been on a team with four evenly balanced lines that can put the puck in the net,” he said, adding that every line has contributed goals in their first four games.

Contrary to high school where everyone has their own cliques, Widenmaier said the academy is a small community that makes them familiar with everyone.

“Everyone hangs out with everyone here,” he said. “It’s awesome to meet and get the chance to play with guys from all over the world.”   He hopes the experience at the academy will open up doors for him to play hockey for a university somewhere in the U.S.

“Getting good grades and getting into university or college is the first priority,” said Widenmaier.  His teammate Desnoyers has also earned himself a place on the Mountaineer’s starting team.
Desnoyers said he was approached by the academy while playing for the Metcalfe Jets Junior “B” team last March.

“They presented me with a package describing the school and its pursuit of academic and athletic excellence and offered me a scholarship to attend and play on their varsity hockey team,” said Desnoyers.  The past one month has been fantastic, according to Desnoyers.  “After only one month, the team has really come together with players from all over the world,” he said.

He said he is looking forward to enjoying his time at the academy and completing his full course load to qualify for university.

“At the same time I expect our team to finish at the top, in its first year playing in the International Junior Hockey League,” Desnoyers said.

Coach Colin Participates in 25th Anniversary Man In Motion Tour

On Friday, October 26th, 2011 Colin Glenn had the great honour of being one of the 7,000 participants across Canada who will participate in the 25th anniversary Rick Hanson Relay.  Events and activities will take place across the country to commemorate the Man In Motion World Tour that took place 25 years ago to make the world more accessible and inclusive and to find a cure for spinal cord injury (SCI).

Colin is the 2011-2012 Major Midget Coach, he has given back to the community for years but the biggest hurdle Colin has had to overcome was beating Cancer.  Diagnosed with Cancer while playing hockey, the cancer was detected when he was injured and had to go through a series of tests.  The injury was very unfortunate but in a way it may have saved Colin’s life.

Congratulations Colin on being chosen to be part of the Man In Motion Anniversary Tour!

Former Ottawa Junior 67s AAA forward Nathan Pancel is off to a great start in Sudbury!

The Sudbury Wolves Hockey Club have started their training camp and former Ottawa Junior 67s AAA forward Nathan Pancel is off to a great start!

Wolves hopefuls hit the ice

By Ben Leeson/The Sudbury Star

Nathan Pancel takes the term "stepping up" quite literally.

On the first day of Sudbury Wolves training camp, his feet hardly stopped moving.

The speedy forward from Orleans, Ont., whom the Wolves signed this past spring, impressed in a pair of scrimmages at Sudbury Community Arena on Thursday, showing good hands and good quickness, as well as a willingness to skate into traffic near the net.

Sudbury's fifth-round pick in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection, Pancel saw limited action in this year's playoffs. But the 17-year-old hopes to earn a top-six assignment in 2011-12.

Bettering his chance is the news that overage winger Michael MacDonald will be late joining the team while recovering from off-season knee surgery.

"Yeah, it's a shame that MacDonald can't come back, because he's injured, but hopefully I can be a dark horse and help the team," Pancel said.

"I want to show I can compete on one of the top lines and be a guy you can count on at the end of the day to score."

He did that Thursday morning, combining with returning winger Josh Leivo on a pretty two-way passing play and finishing with a goal on import netminder Johan Mattsson.

"It felt good out there," Pancel said. "It was great to play with guys like Mike Sgarbossa and Josh Leivo."

Pancel got his nose dirty, too, heading into the blue paint and engaging in a spirited shoving match with veteran defenceman Charlie Dodero.

Pancel has been in the area for several weeks, staying at his family's cottage near Onaping.

Prior to that, he spent the off-season working out in Ottawa. One of his training partners was Nick Baptiste, the Wolves' first-round pick, sixth overall, in this year's OHL draft.

"I have been working with Scott Heffernan, who played for Columbus, and we've been targeting my legs and my upper body," said Pancel, a 5-foot-10, 182-pounder. "I have been working a lot on my skating, trying to get faster, quicker."

pancel
Pancel pictured above at his first Wolves practice last season with his own personal fan club

Also showing good speed Thursday was free agent forward Scott Mitchell, who topped a list of invitees the Wolves released last month.

A hard-nosed 19-year-old from London, Ont., Mitchell stepped into some solid checks and showed good energy and defensive awareness.

He brings 15 games of OHL experience to camp, after spending parts of two seasons with the Erie Otters.

"I try to be an energy guy, to hit and to fight when needed," Mitchell said.

In fact, he said, fans shouldn't be surprised to see him drop the gloves this week.

"This is my fourth OHL camp now," said Mitchell, who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 180 pounds. "So I have kind of got an advantage that way. When you get older, you have more confidence.

"It's different now. The first time I did this, I thought the other guys were so much older than me. I was intimidated. But now, I'm more confident in my ability to fight for a position."

Baptiste, recently cleared for action after rehabbing an injured shoulder, didn't take part in scrimmages. But the Barrhaven, Ont., native did skate in practice, wearing a red jersey.

There, he showed good anticipation, speed and agility.

Centre Jacob Harris, a second-round pick this year, didn't look out of place Thursday, though he admitted to struggling with the speed of the major junior game.

"I'm still trying to get used to it," said Harris, who hails from Georgetown, Ont. "But I think I should be able to by the next game.

"I found it a little difficult at times, just because it's faster than what I'm used to, trying to get into plays and stuff like that.

"My main goal is to show them why they drafted me. They said I was a hard worker and I want to show that I can be that type of guy."

Another second-rounder, defenceman Evan De Haan, showed well, as did the Wolves' third-rounder this year, forward Danny Desrochers.

Sudbury's fourth-round pick, defenceman Patrick Crampton, didn't make the start of camp. He's recovering from surgery on an injured wrist.

Eighth-rounder Anders Nielsen, another blueliner, paired with veteran Josh McFadden and showed good poise — and bravery, lining up veteran Marcus Foligno for a hit.

For his troubles, he had his helmet rubbed off his head by the burly winger.

Following the second scrimmage Thursday, head coach Trent Cull said the overall pace and physicality were an improvement over last year.

"Yeah, I think it might have been," Cull said. "And we're happy about that. Those are two things we wanted, to make this camp more competitive."

Cull was impressed with his veterans and with the competitiveness shown by the eight goaltenders in camp.

"I really liked the way our veterans led the pace of play," he said. "And we had some good goaltending battles, too.

"If these guys want to be good players in the OHL, they have to show us their best at camp. And, for the most part, I think we've seen that."

Next week, several players will depart for NHL training camps — all the more reason to have those who remain in peak condition.

"Yeah, we know how we started last year and we wanted to improve on that," Cull said. "We're focusing on getting into shape as a team, mentally and physically."

Camp continues today, starting with a practice at 9 a.m.

A scrimmage follows at 10:15 a.m., followed by a goaltending session at 3:15 p.m.

The day wraps up with the annual Blue and White intersquad game, set for 6 p.m.

Admission is free.

Several cuts are expected by Friday night. Remaining players will return Saturday for a 10:30 a.m. practice and 12:45 p.m. workout.

Former Jr. 67’s Daniel Altshuller Brings Home Gold

August 15, 2011 – Former Jr. 67’s player Daniel Altshuller, goalie with the Under-18 Team Canada squad has returned from the Czech Republic and Slovakia with a gold medal.

Daniel, formerly a member of the Ottawa Jr. 67's 2009-2010 Minor Midget team was the starter for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2011 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. Daniel played all 5 games of the tournament and posted an impressive 1.29 GAA and 93.1 SV%. Daniel gave up only one even strength goal in the entire tournament.

This is four years in a row that Canada has won the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament and has won 16 of 21 summer Men’s Under-18 tournaments since 1991.  Canada played the Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland in the round robin and then defeated Russia 5-0 in the semi-finals then went on to defeat Sweden 4-1 in the Gold medal match.

Altshuller

Following the gold medal match Altshuller was interviewed by TSN and was quoted as saying, “before the tournament we were all from different leagues and now it is all about Canada.  No groups just all teammates.”

Daniel will next take part in the NHL's Research, Development and Orientation Camp, to be held Aug. 17-18 at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence in Etobicoke, Ont.

Thirty-six of the top prospects available for the 2012 Entry Draft were invited to the camp.

Altshuller played for the Nepean Raiders Junior A team last season.   Good luck Daniel in the upcoming season!

Guelph signs Zach Leslie

The Guelph Storm Hockey Club have announced that former Ottawa Junior 67’s AAA defenseman Zach Leslie, has signed an Ontario Hockey League contract with the Guelph.

The Ottawa native played in 56 games with the Gloucester Rangers Jr. A of the Central Canada Hockey League (CJHL) last season. Zach had several NCAA Universities interested in his services and likely had a pick of scholarship offers but in the end chose the OHL.

zach_leslie

"The Storm is very pleased that Zach and his family have made the decision to continue his hockey career and academic development as a member of the Storm", Vice President and GM Mike Kelly said. "Having watched Zach play junior in Gloucester this past season, I am very confident that he will be a major contributor to our on ice success. Zach exemplifies the type of talented, high achieving individual that we intend to build a championship team around. The fact that Zach chose to play for the Storm and forgo the many college hockey opportunities available to him, speaks volumes about his commitment both on and off the ice, and the confidence he has in the Storm organization."

Zach will join the Storm when training camp opens at the Sleeman Centre in late August.
